What is Multi-Factor Authentication?

Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) is a secondary verification that you are who you say you are when logging into an application, online account, virtual private network, etc.

Diving in, there are three methods of authentication:

  1. What you know
  2. What you have
  3. What you are

Please see these explained below.

WHAT YOU KNOW.

These are as simple as knowing a password to login to Facebook, using a pin at the ATM, and/or providing a signature for validation.

WHAT YOU HAVE.

A debit card or a key are great examples of this. However, your smartphone is the best example because as you know, we’ve been able to authenticate using apps. Using Google Authenticator to generate codes is another good way to stay secure.

WHAT YOU ARE.

This involves biometrics: finger print scan or face ID. This is a newer approach to security, but it’s not at all unordinary as technology has already presented us with this concept.
